The Offices at Chestnut Green is an adaptive re-use of one of the former Massachusetts state hospitals that were closed in the mid-70’s, remained vacant and unheated, and fell into serious disrepair until their sale for redevelopment around 2005. Close to half of the square footage at Foxboro were dilapidated and demolished. This redevelopment scheme included 100,000 SF of commercial offices, 55 rental apartment buildings, single and multi-family homes, and a new retail complex on many of the redevelopment parcels around the old hospital.
An extensive preservation specification was approved by the National Parks Service. As part of the the team, Helicon helped redevelop the exterior of the building back to health and also to accentuate and enhance the history with new interior work being done. Helicon fully designing and planning over 100,000 SF of tenant interior work as of 2011.
Helicon was the concept/design architects in collaboration with Cubellis (architect’s of record,) on the new retail development. Historic elements and scaled public spaces found at the main hospital were borrowed and reinterpreted for an economically minded cluster of buildings evoking a village-like feel.
